Shibata Town is located around 25 km south of Sendai, the only government ordinance city in Tohoku. The Shiroishi River flows through the center of the town, and is joined by the Abukuma River in the south-east of the town, from whence it empties into the Pacific Ocean. The Town is famed for its cherry blossoms, and the combined view of the Hitome Sennbon Zakura ( “”thousand cherry trees at a glance”” ) lining the banks of the Shiroishi River and the cherry blossoms of the Funaoka Castle Ruins Park create a beautiful feast for the eyes. People visit from all over the world to see this magnificent spectacle, creating a real buzz in the Town.

Shiroishi River bank and Hitome Sennbon Zakura

The superb scenery of the Hitome Sennbon Zakura and banks of the Shiroishi River is the only location in the whole of Miyagi Prefecture that has been selected by the Japan Cherry Blossom Association for its list of the 100 most beautiful cherry blossom views in Japan. The huge Yoshino cherry trees, over eighty years old, burst into color in the spring in a row of trees that almost overwhelm the viewer with their beauty.

Slope car of Funaoka Castle Ruins Park

A slope car is in opertion, taking visitors slowly up through cherry trees to the highest point in the town with an altitude of 136 meters, from where a view of the whole town can be enjoyed.

しばた千桜橋

Shibata Sen-ou-kyou Bridge

The bridge, whose name means ‘1,000 cherry blossoms bridge,’ links the banks of the Shiroishi River and Funaoka Castle Ruins Park and is equipped with a 95.1-meter slope. It is lit up at night providing an impressive vista of the mystical bridge and cherry blossoms. It is one of the treasures of the town that can also be enjoyed in the daytime.

船岡平和観音像

Statue of Funaoka Heiwa kannon

This impressive 24-meter-high statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, was erected at the behest of Saburo Noguchi in memory of his late wife and with a prayer for peace in the world in 1975. Gently holding a dove to her breast, Kannon silently watches over and protects the Town.

Museum of History and Folklore

The museum of History and Folklore located near Funaoka Castle Ruins Park contains a tea ceremony hut called ‘Joshinan,’ the ‘Shigenkaku’ that provides an explanation of the Town’s history, and a permanent exhibition of local industry, all reflecting Shibata Town’s history, culture and industry.
