白石市

Shiroishi City is an historic old castle town situated in the southern part of Miyagi Prefecture and surrounded by the bountiful nature that spreads across the foothills of the Zao range of mountains. There are many historic sites left in the city including the castle, while pristine water still courses through its waterways and irrigation channels.

Shiroishi Castle

Shiroishi Castle was the residence of Katakura Kojuro Kagetsuna, famed for this support of the Sendai Daimyo, Date Masamune. The castle was faithfully restored to its former state in 1995. The all-wooden reconstruction is one of but a very few in Japan, and has won much academic acclaim.

The moment you try on the armor of the courageous warriors of old you will feel as if you have been transported back in time! Enjoy taking photos with the old castle in the background, or strolling around its grounds.

Shiroishi Umen

Shiroishi umen is a type of noodle made from wheat flour and salt, and is the local delicacy of the city. It has gained a favorable reputation because it uses no oil and is therefore healthy and easily digested.

Zaimokuiwa

Measuring 65 meters in height and 100 meters in width, the Zaimokuiwa (literally ‘the timber rock’) is located a little down stream from the Shichikashuku Dam on the upper reaches of the Shiroishi River. One can capture superb views of the volcanic rock columns from the park located on the opposite bank of the river.

Kamasaki Onsen

The hot water feeding this spa was discovered as long as 600 years ago. Its silky and comparatively lukewarm waters contain chloride spring water. As suggested by the saying “Go to Kamasaki for a wound”, the spas is famed nationwide. The spa is the location of a rare surviving example of inn architecture from the Taisho Era (1912-1926), but wherever you stay you will find the warmth and comfort of the good old days.

Obara Onsen

Obara spa is located along the banks of a deeply carved V-shaped ravine in the upper waters of the Shiroishi River, where it has been soothing people for around 800 years. The transparent water comes from a simple thermal spring and is gentle on the skin. Many people seeking cures visit this spa that has a reputation for being beneficial to the eyes.
